Do I Need A Surge Protector?

There are a lot of horror stories out there from people who didn’t use a surge protector. That said, there are far more who travel in their RV and have never used one. At the end of the day, it is a gamble you as the RV owner have to decide upon. It is important to take into account what COULD happen much like an insurance policy or a spare tire. You may drive your whole life and never need to use your auto insurance, but what if you do get in an accident? Will you be glad you have insurance? You may also go your whole life and never get a flat tire, but what if you do? Will you be glad you have a spare tire on board? We strongly adding a surge protector to your list of RV basics if you haven’t already.

What Am I Protecting?

It is important to understand a surge protector doesn’t just protect your RV electrical system, it also protects what you have plugged into your RV electrical system. We aren’t even talking the safety related issues an electrical fire poses, we are discussing the cost of damaged electrical wire, power converters, and sensitive electronics like laptops and tablets plugged into the RV. Protection Versus Detection

As you research the various products on the market, you will find less expensive variations of the EMS-PT30X. Understand that some of these products only “detect” potential electrical issues but do not offer protection from them. They essentially only analyse the electrical circuit of what you are plugging into, they don’t continue to monitor the circuit and cut off power to the RV should conditions change. The Progressive Industries line of surge protectors do both.

Additionally, some of them only detect voltage or check for proper wiring such as reverse polarity or open ground. Many of them do not detect frequencies which can damage electronics as well.

What We Chose

We ultimately chose the EMS-PT30X for several reasons. First one being the level of protection the Progressive Industries line of surge protectors offer. We specifically purchased the PT30X as the “30” means it is designed for an RV wired for 30 Amp service like ours. If your RV is manufactured for 50 Amp service you would want the EMS-PT50X. Lastly, we chose the external surge protector model over the hard-wired version in case we purchased a different RV down the road.We weren’t fond of the idea of needing to purchase a new one for a different RV, and the portable one would allow us to just move it over to the new RV provided it was also wired for 30 Amps.

Drawbacks of the EMS-PT30X

As with a lot of products on the market, it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies when it comes to the EMS-PT30X surge protector. It is not, by any means, the cheapest surge protector on the market. As mentioned previously though, it is less expensive than replacing electronics and paying costly shop fees to fix melted wiring and components. Additionally, it is rather bulky which means it will take up more storage space than smaller designed products from other manufactures. Lastly, there has been more complaints as of late regarding product quality as manufacturing moved from the U.S. to Mexico. We have had ours plugged into several RV parks however, and have had no issues with ours. Progressive Industries also comes with a lifetime warranty if you should have issues with yours.

Closing Thoughts On the EMS-PT30X

In short, the EMS-PT30X is cheap insurance to protect your RV electrical components. As previously mentioned, however, it is really up to the RV owner at the end of the day as to what they deem important. As for us, we prefer the peace of mind knowing when we plug into the pedestal at an RV park our RV is safe from electrical damage. We would also add it to our list of useful gift ideas for RV owners should you be needing ideas for an RV owner in your life!
