Delicious Dutch Oven Lasagna

Campfire Dutch Oven Lasagna

There is just something about cooking in a dutch oven which makes us feel like we are connecting with our past. There is also something about lasagna which makes us smile and tucks us into our happy place. This Dutch Oven Lasagna recipe thusly makes for not only a fantastic tasting dish but also an amazing yet rustic cooking experience. It is perfect for glamping!  If you have never used a dutch oven before, this is a great dish to get you started!

We have included a gear list below, but a few things you will need off the bat is a cast iron dutch oven and some charcoal briquets to heat it. You will also need some basic know-how of how to cook in a cast iron dutch oven. We did a review on a seven-piece dutch oven set which you can find here. The basics, however, are you will need to “season” your dutch oven before using it for the first time, and you need to know how many briquettes you need to reach the desired temp. You can put your cast iron dutch oven in the campfire, but temperature control isn’t as precise. We suggest using the Dutch Oven Temperature Chart we found on campingforfoodies.com

4 QT Lodge Dutch OvenWe also suggest using a dutch oven with the feet on the bottom if using briquettes. If you plan on putting it in the oven, you can use one without the feet. The models with feet allow space for the briquettes to sit, and also enables you to set it over coals in the campfire and the like.

Instructions
  1. Preheat: If using briquettes, light them and get them heating. You will need 25 for a 10" dutch oven. If using a regular oven, preheat to 400 degrees.
  2. Assembly: Start by pouring the olive oil in the bottom of the dutch oven followed by 1/2 cup of pasta sauce spread evenly. This will help to prevent sticking. Next place a layer of lasagna noodles followed by 1/2 cup of sauce, 1/3 cup of baby spinach, and 1/2 cup of cheese. Do this two more times to create layers. For the top layer use noodles, 1/2 cup of sauce, and 1/2 cup of cheese. Sprinkle on dried oregano and dried basil.
  3. Bake: Put the lid on your dutch oven and set it over 8 heated briquettes. Next, place the remaining 17 briquettes on the lid and let cook for 30 minutes. If using a regular oven, place the lid on the dutch oven and place in oven for 30 minutes at 400 degrees.
  4. Serve: Remove the coals from your dutch oven and move your dutch oven to a safe surface. Carefully remove the very hot lid and set aside. Cut the lasagna into four servings, plate, and enjoy!
